GREAT SPOT STILL VISITING THE FEEDERS

FRIDAY 30 JANUARY 2009

It was the second day of a biting SE wind blowing right in across from Russia. Although dry and bright, the wind chill was quite unbearable.

CHAFFINCH HOUSE (LITTLE CHALFONT)

For much of the morning, a female GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER repeatedly visited one of my nut feeders, close to the window

House Sparrow numbers were holding up well, peaking at 34, but again no Greenfinch.

In the past week, 5 BRAMBLINGS have visited a garden in Chesfield Place.

Eurasian Collared Dove (Mike Lawrence) - one was sadly killed in my garden today

THURSDAY 22 JANUARY 2009

Another very wet night with heavy rain and strong winds overnight giving way to an occluded front bringing intermittent rain until lunchtime. The front then went through leaving a fine and quite mild afternoon.

CHAFFINCH HOUSE (BUCKS)

Shortly after the rain cleared, a RED KITE overflew the garden and took an interest in a dead Collared Dove which sadly got hit by a Sparrowhawk. It swooped down several times but then veered away and drifted off towards the Chess River Valley.
